Project Statement

Blazer Communications has initiated a two-year project to detail the history of Jewish life in the greater Los Angeles area, from its beginnings in 1850 through the present. It has been over three decades since the last comprehensive document was published describing the rich and dynamic history of Jewish Los Angeles. This project will propel this enduring history into the 21st century.

Five Elements of the Project

I. Two Hour Documentary
The documentary will present The History of Jewish Los Angeles, dating from its beginning with the first Jewish immigrants in 1850, and it will follow these beginnings through modern Los Angeles.

  • The documentary will explore the factors that drew Jewish people to Los Angeles and motivated them to develop a thriving Jewish community in this vast frontier.
  • Paralleling the Jewish history, the documentary will also reference relevant historical circumstances connecting the times and events of Los Angeles to the nation and the world.
  • The documentary will be produced in both DVD and VHS tape formats.

II. Two Hour Television Special

  • The documentary will air as a television special similar to historical documentaries broadcast by Public Television (PBS), A & E, and the History Channel.
  • The program will be promoted and marketed in a manner similar to other historical specials.

III. Television Series

  • A weekly television series will be presented as segments to be aired on Phil Blazer’s regularly scheduled television show, Jewish Life, (Sundays, 9AM on KSCI-TV, Channel 18), now in its 26th year of broadcasting.
  • The series will highlight community leaders who have been an integral part of Los Angeles history, either through their own efforts or through family and friends.

IV. Tabletop Book

  • An extravagant tabletop book will be published to include photographs, interview excerpts and text, all of which will conform to and reflect the information and historical perspective presented in the documentary.

V. Educational Curriculum

  • The documentary and book will provide the foundation for an educational curriculum which will be used to teach The History of Jewish Los Angeles to children in both elementary and secondary schools.
