TENNIS LA A UNIQUE GIFT FROM THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL
A FREE ATHLETIC PROGRAM FOR LOS ANGELES YOUTH
Established in September 2003 by TV/Radio host Phil Blazer, who also publishes The Jewish News, and in cooperation with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Tennis LA has been developed to not only teach tennis, but to encourage positive attitudes and team spirit. A gift from the people of Israel to the City of Los Angeles, Tennis LA seeks to involve children from all walks of life in its activities by providing free tennis lessons, including equipment, courts, and coaching.
Tennis LA is modeled after the Israel Tennis Centers, founded by Ian Froman, which have developed a unique social program that teaches boys and girls to play together, build self-esteem, gain self-confidence, and improve their abilities to concentrate. In addition, tennis is used as a tool to positively affect children, giving them basic tennis instruction and opening them to experiences that help strengthen the body and the mind.
Since opening the first Tennis Center in Israel in 1976, the program has touched over 300,000 children. According to Froman, “We have developed a highly successful program in Israel and now, instead of always being on the receiving end of American aid, we want to give something back by sharing our know-how with the children of America who can benefit the most.”
We are currently at three park locations in Los Angeles: Highland Park, South Los Angeles and North Hollywood. Additionally, we are in the process of expanding to more facilities in the Los Angeles area, so check back soon for more information.
